Katia and Marielle Labèque perform the suites for two pianos from the three operas composed by Philip Glass after Cocteau, in a scenography designed by Nina Chalot and Cyril Teste: a chandelier is placed above the pianists, creating intimate spaces, and illuminating the listening experience.

In 1964, at the age of 27, Philip Glass moved to Paris to study with Nadia Boulanger. This encounter was decisive in the young composer's development, since it not only immersed him profoundly in French culture, but it also provided him with a mastery of the French language that would help him write and diversify his operas, which he dedicated to Cocteau, in the 1990s.

In 2021, the famous pianists Katia and Marielle Labèque created the instrumental suites for two pianos from Philip Glass's opera Les Enfants Terribles, based on Cocteau's film. The success of both the recording and the ensuing international tour led the pianists to ask Philip Glass and his musical director Michael Riesman to complete the trilogy by applying the same method to the remaining two operas from the Cocteau trilogy: Orphée and La Belle et la Bête.

  • Cyril Teste: artistic direction
  • Nina Chalot: scenography
  • Mehdi Toutain-Lopez: lighting, digital design

Produced by Philarmonie de Paris in co-production with Barbican, National Concert Hall- Dublin, Cité Musicale- Metz, Opéra National de Bordeaux, La Comète- Scene National de Châlons-en-Champagne, Les Nuits de Fourvière.
